Franna MAC 25

Borger Cranes

This interesting Franna MAC 25 belongs to Borger Cranes and is deployed from their branch in Pinkenba (AU). It is a 25-tonne pick-and-carry crane built in 2014. The name MAC stands for Mobile Articulated Crane and 25 refers to the maximum lifting capacity.

The Franna crane concept is very popular in Australia. These cranes can travel with a load. The crane boom is permanently mounted on the front section and the crane has no steered axles, but articulates in the middle. The articulation angle is 40 degrees to the left or right.

The crane is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM906LA, a 6.4-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 205 kW (275 hp). The engine is mounted in the rear section. The carrier is 7.155 metres long and 2.72 metres wide. The crane weighs approximately 24 tonnes.

A 1.5-tonne ballast weight is mounted underneath the rear of the crane. During transport on public roads, this is mounted to the front bumper for better weight distribution.

The crane is equipped with a 4-section boom, with a base length of 6.12 metres and a maximum length of 18.42 metres. Here, the boom is 14.3 metres long. The maximum load of 25 tonnes is lifted at a radius of 1.4 metres. On this crane, the radius is measured from the centre of the front axle.

At the front of the crane is a large storage box in which rigging can be stored. This crane has a single cab; later models were fitted with a double cab.

The 4.2-tonne hoist winch with 14 mm hoist rope is mounted beneath the boom.

Suspended from the boom here is a 3-sheave hook with four falls of rope, providing a lifting capacity of 16.8 tonnes. Lifting points are also provided on the collars of the boom sections, allowing loads to be lifted without using the hoist winch. The boom can be moved through a range from -10 to +65 degrees relative to the horizontal.

These cranes can reach a road speed of 75 kilometres per hour. In transport condition, the crane is 9.985 metres long, 2.72 metres wide and 3.075 metres high.

Here, the crane was deployed as an auxiliary crane during the erection of a Liebherr 290 HC tower crane. The crane unloads the trucks and pre-assembles the components of the tower crane on the ground. A larger telescopic crane then lifts the sections into position.

A very fine and interesting crane from Borger Cranes!
