Liebherr LR 1400/1

Thömen

This fine Liebherr LR 1400/1 of Thömen from Hamburg (DE) was deployed in the spring of 2009 in Leverkusen (DE) together with the Liebherr LR 1400/2 of Wagenborg Nedlift from Hengelo (NL) to erect a heavy steel structure. Both cranes had been hired by Schmidbauer.

The Liebherr LR 1400/1 is a 400-tonne crawler crane. In total, Thömen had three LR 1400/1 cranes in its fleet, of which this was the last one. The crane is powered by a Liebherr D 9406 TI-E, a 6-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 300 kW (408 hp).

Here, the crawler crane is erected with 155 tonnes of ballast on the superstructure. The ballast has a swing radius of 6.7 metres; the maximum swing radius of the A-frame is 8.3 metres.

The carrier is 10.38 metres long and 8.7 metres wide.

For the extension of the BayArena football stadium in Leverkusen, a large steel ring was built on the structure. The two crawler cranes lift the segment in a tandem lift; this was the last segment with a weight of approximately 173 tonnes.

Here, the crane was deployed in SW configuration. The main boom has a length of 28 metres and the luffing jib is 35 metres long here. In SW configuration, the main boom can be a maximum of 49 metres long combined with a 91-metre luffing jib. Alternatively, a 56-metre main boom with a 70-metre luffing jib can be configured.

A total of 43 tonnes of central ballast is mounted between the crawler tracks. Per side, this consists of two 8-tonne blocks, on top of which a wide plate of 5.5 tonnes is mounted. This plate also serves as a platform so that the cab can be reached properly or maintenance can be carried out on the superstructure.

Nowadays, Thömen is part of the Hagedorn Group.

Each crane is lifting 86.3 tonnes here. During the lift, the crane of Thömen slowly travelled in the direction of the crane of Wagenborg; the crane of Wagenborg remained stationary and only slewed.

A very fine and rugged crane from Thömen!
