Terex CC 2400-1

Mammoet

In the spring of 2009, Mammoet from Schiedam (NL) deployed this impressive Terex CC 2400-1 to lift a heavy transformer out of a barge. The Terex CC 2400-1 is a 400-tonne crawler crane.

The transformer had to be transhipped from the pontoon onto an SPMT. The CC 2400-1 was erected on a quay.

Here, the crane was configured with a 600-tonne Liebherr hook, which is generally possible when the hoist rope has the same diameter. The hook was reeved with 30 falls and has a dead weight of approximately 16 tonnes.

The main boom has a length of 42 metres and the superlift boom is 30 metres long. The crane is reeved to the maximum and can therefore lift a maximum of 400 tonnes in this configuration, up to a radius of 12 metres. At the maximum radius of 38 metres, the crane can still lift 114 tonnes.

The transformer with a weight of 323 tonnes is suspended in the crane; including hook and rigging, the crane will be lifting approximately 345 tonnes here. The crane can handle that up to a radius of approximately 15 metres. 238 tonnes of superlift ballast were in use, which is almost the maximum for this crane.

After the transformer is brought to a very short radius, part of the superlift ballast is removed. The crane will shortly have to travel some distance backwards to make room for the SPMT transporter that will carry the transformer to its destination.

A total of 28 axle lines of SPMT will be used to transport the transformer.

The transformer has been placed on the SPMT and can be unhooked. The crane was now standing partly on the public road, which had been closed during the lifting operation. Two auxiliary cranes were in use to remove the superlift ballast.

The crane's carrier is 10.25 metres long and 8.45 metres wide. A single crawler track is 10.25 metres long, 1.5 metres wide and 1.475 metres high. The weight per piece is 25.9 tonnes.

120 tonnes of ballast are mounted on the superstructure. This consists of a 20-tonne base plate with a total of ten blocks of 10 tonnes each on top of it.

A total of 20 tonnes of central ballast are mounted on the carrier.

The crane is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM 501 LA, a 12-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 260 kW (353 hp). The crane is equipped with two 15-tonne hoist winches.

The maximum superlift ballast weighs 240 tonnes, and the tray itself weighs 10 tonnes. Mammoet uses modular ballast slabs, each with a weight of 12 tonnes. Here, the superlift ballast is 118 tonnes, which was required when the crane slowly travelled backwards with the transformer at short radius.

A very impressive crane and operation by Mammoet!

Later that evening, the SPMT would transport the heavy transformer to its destination.
