Freightliner was founded from the ideas of Leland James, president of Consolidated Freightways, who wanted lighter and more efficient trucks for long-distance
freight transport. The company began in 1940 as Freightways Manufacturing Company in Salt Lake City, Utah (US), and became Freightliner Corporation in 1942. After World War II,
production moved to Portland, Oregon (US), where Freightliner grew as a specialist in lightweight cab-over-engine trucks. In the following decades, the company expanded strongly
and became an important name in the North American heavy-truck market. A major turning point came in 1981, when Daimler-Benz AG purchased Freightliner, giving the brand greater
technical and financial support. Freightliner later expanded further through new product lines and related businesses, including custom chassis, buses, and other truck brands
under Daimler's North American operations. Today, Freightliner is part of Daimler Truck North America and is one of the leading truck brands in North America, especially in
medium- and heavy-duty classes. Its main products include the Cascadia long-haul truck, M2 medium-duty models, vocational trucks, and electric models such as the eCascadia and
eM2, with production mainly in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Mexico.
